Israel on Sunday launched airstrikes on Houthi rebel positions in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, killing six people and injuring 86 others, according to local reports. The strikes targeted a building, a power plant, and a gas station in central Sanaa.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, Israel has repeatedly targeted the Iran-backed Houthis, who it accuses of attacking Israeli territory and interests.
Strikes Caught on Video
Videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising above buildings, while another clip captured a massive fireball in the city. However, these visuals have not been independently verified.
What Israel Said
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation, calling it a retaliatory strike against Houthi rebels.
“Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles towards Israel and targeted Israeli citizens. These strikes were carried out in direct response,” the IDF said in a statement.
The military added that it struck Houthi military infrastructure, including a site near the Presidential Palace, the Asar and Hejaz power plants, and fuel storage facilities. According to Israel, Houthis use civilian infrastructure for military purposes, making such sites legitimate targets.
Houthi Threats in the Red Sea
Beyond targeting Israel, Houthi rebels have been disrupting international shipping in the Red Sea for the past two years. The Red Sea is a critical global trade route, with goods worth $1 trillion passing through annually.
Between November 2023 and December 2024, Houthis reportedly attacked over 100 ships using missiles and drones, raising global concerns about maritime security.
