Indian Railways Eases Travel Rules for Disabled Passengers, UDID Card Now Valid for Reserved Coaches

In a significant step toward improving accessibility, Indian Railways has updated its travel rules for persons with disabilities. As per the latest announcement, passengers holding a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card will now be allowed to travel in coaches reserved specifically for differently-abled passengers in mail and express trains.

The Railways clarified that individuals with a valid UDID card issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities will be treated as bonafide passengers in these reserved coaches. This move simplifies identification and ensures that eligible passengers can access reserved facilities without unnecessary hurdles. Additionally, those already entitled to concessional fares under existing railway rules can continue to avail those benefits using valid identity proof.

To maintain fairness, the Railways has also made it clear that strict action will be taken against unauthorized passengers found occupying these reserved coaches. Such violations will be dealt with under provisions of the Railways Act 1989, reinforcing the intent to keep these facilities exclusively for eligible passengers.

The Railways also highlighted the importance of the Divyangjan identity system, which helps passengers with disabilities avail travel concessions more smoothly. Through the IRCTC platform, passengers can register themselves in the “Master List” by selecting the appropriate disability category and entering relevant ID details. This allows for quicker bookings and ensures that concessions are applied automatically during ticket reservations.

To avail concessions, users need to log in to the IRCTC website, select the “Person with Disability” option while booking tickets, and proceed with the journey details. Once verified, the system applies the concession and completes the booking process after payment.

Overall, this rule change is aimed at making train travel more inclusive, streamlined, and secure for persons with disabilities, ensuring they can travel with greater dignity and convenience.
