New Delhi: In another step to strengthen India-Sri Lanka development ties, the Indian government on Sunday launched the second part of the fourth phase of its housing project in the central hill town of Bandarawela in Sri Lanka.

It is a major development assistance initiative launched by the Indian government to build 65,000 homes in the island nation. This multi-phase program provides grant assistance to help resettle internally displaced Indian-origin Tamils ​​in the country's plantation areas.

Resolved to build so many houses

Under the fourth phase, India has pledged to build 10,000 houses, of which 1,100 are already under construction. In the third phase, 4,000 houses have been completed, improving the quality of life for thousands of families across Sri Lanka.

The President of Sri Lanka was also present.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha attended the event. High Commissioner Jha said that India's housing assistance now covers 65,000 houses across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, with a grant commitment of over 64 billion Sri Lankan rupees.

The initiative was launched in 2010

This project began in 2010. The government announced it would build 50,000 homes in Sri Lanka. According to the Indian High Commission, the first project, involving the construction of 1,000 homes, was launched in November 2010 and completed in July 2012. The second phase, involving 45,000 homes in the Northern and Eastern provinces, was completed by 2018. In the third phase, approximately 3,900 homes have been completed, with a target of 4,000.
