‘If She Wasn’t Mine, I Wouldn’t Let Her Be Anyone Else’s’: Sister’s Grief After Tarn Taran College Shootout

A tragic incident rooted in one-sided obsession has shaken Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, where a young woman with dreams of becoming a lawyer was shot dead inside her college classroom. The victim, Sandeep Kaur, was allegedly murdered by her classmate, Prince Raj, after she repeatedly rejected his advances.

Speaking to the police and media, Sandeep’s sister Manpreet Kaur broke down while recounting the events leading up to the killing. “My sister wanted to become a lawyer. That man destroyed her future,” she said. According to Manpreet, Prince had proposed to Sandeep just days before the incident. When she refused, he allegedly threatened her, saying that if she could not be his, he would not allow her to belong to anyone else.

Obsession Turned Fatal

Family members told investigators that Sandeep had been engaged three months earlier, a development that reportedly enraged the accused. Prince Raj, described as a classmate from college, allegedly began stalking Sandeep and mentally harassing her.

Manpreet stated that Sandeep had tried several times to reason with him, explaining that her family was going through a difficult phase and that, in the absence of her father, she wanted to focus solely on her studies and career. Despite this, the accused’s behaviour reportedly grew increasingly aggressive and obsessive.

On Friday, Prince allegedly issued a direct threat to Sandeep. Over the weekend, colleges remained closed. On Monday, when classes resumed, the situation took a deadly turn.

Shooting Inside the Classroom

According to police, during a lecture, Prince Raj entered the classroom carrying a .32-bore pistol concealed in his bag. Before anyone could intervene, he allegedly fired at Sandeep Kaur at close range. She died on the spot.

After the shooting, the accused reportedly reloaded the weapon and shot himself in the head. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Questions Over Campus Security and Gun Access

The incident has sparked widespread concern over campus safety and the growing gun culture in Punjab. Police sources said the accused’s father is a retired security guard, and investigators are examining whether the weapon belonged to him and how it was accessed.

Serious questions are also being raised about how a student managed to enter a college campus with a firearm without detection.

Police Investigation Underway

Tarn Taran police have recovered the pistol from the crime scene. The Senior Superintendent of Police said all aspects of the case are being investigated. Statements of family members have been recorded, and CCTV footage from the college premises is being scrutinised.

The killing has left the victim’s family devastated and the local community in shock. The case has reignited debate over unchecked obsession, easy access to firearms, and the urgent need for stronger safety measures in educational institutions.
