“I am not a judge” — West Indies Coach Darren Sammy’s strong response on rape allegations against player

West Indies cricket has been rocked by serious allegations of sexual abuse involving one of its players. According to a report in Guyana’s Kaieteur News, a West Indies bowler is accused of raping 11 women, including a minor, with some allegations dating back to 2023. No formal complaint has yet been lodged in the matter.

Darren Sammy speaks out

Before the second Test against Australia, West Indies head coach Darren Sammy addressed the issue, calling it very serious and expressing hope that justice will prevail soon. Sammy said,
“We all know what is going on in the media. I am very close to my players and have talked to them. All I can say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice should be done. However, these are only allegations, and we would like that justice is done soon.”

When asked if Cricket West Indies has started an internal investigation, Sammy refrained from commenting directly and said,
“I cannot answer this. I am sure they are making every effort to ensure that the correct procedure is followed.”

Background and ongoing situation

The controversy has stirred the cricket world, especially as it unfolds during the ongoing Test series between West Indies and Australia. Australia won the first Test, and the case remains under intense public scrutiny.

Sammy’s measured statement underscores the gravity of the allegations while emphasizing the importance of due process and justice.
