Hyderabad Tragedy: 1 Dead, 12 Hospitalised After Eating Spoiled Mutton Stored in Fridge

A tragic incident has come to light from Hyderabad, Telangana, where 13 members of the same family fell seriously ill after consuming leftover mutton, leading to the death of one person. The incident occurred in Vanasthalipuram RTC Colony.

Deceased Identified as TGSRTC Conductor

The deceased has been identified as Srinivas, 45, who worked as a conductor with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC). He reportedly died due to severe food poisoning after consuming mutton that had been stored in the refrigerator and gone bad.

Mutton Cooked During Festival, Consumed Again

The family had prepared mutton on July 21 to celebrate the Bonalu festival, a traditional event widely observed in Telangana. After the festive meal, leftover mutton was kept in the fridge and consumed again the next day. Soon after, Srinivas and 12 other family members experienced symptoms of food poisoning, including vomiting, diarrhea, and headache.

Hospitalisation and Death

All affected individuals were rushed to a nearby private hospital. Sadly, Srinivas succumbed during treatment. Twelve other members are still undergoing treatment, with two in critical condition, according to hospital sources.

Legal Action and Investigation

A case has been registered at Vanasthalipuram Police Station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 194 for suspicious death. Police are currently conducting further investigation into the matter.

GHMC’s Response

Food safety officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) confirmed that the cause of illness and death was likely due to food poisoning. However, they clarified that GHMC does not have jurisdiction over such cases as their authority is limited to inspecting commercial food establishments, not private households.

Takeaway for the Public

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of consuming improperly stored or leftover food, especially meat. Health officials advise:

  • Proper refrigeration and timely consumption of leftovers

  • Avoid reheating meat after long storage

  • Be cautious during festivals when food is often prepared in large quantities
