You may have often noticed a gurgling sensation in your stomach when you're empty or experiencing a stomach problem. However, there are other reasons for gurgling, such as the digestive process and intestinal contractions. Sometimes, this sound is so loud that even people sitting nearby can hear it. So, let's explore the causes and solutions for gurgling.
What causes a gurgling sound in the stomach?
Our digestive system consists of the stomach and intestines, which are constantly working. When food is present in the stomach, muscles propel the food and liquids forward during the digestion process. Even when the stomach is empty, the digestive system doesn't completely relax. The muscles of the stomach and small intestine contract periodically, pushing gas and liquids through the intestines, and this movement produces the gurgling sound.
Louder sounds on an empty stomach:
Sounds are more pronounced on an empty stomach because there's less food in the stomach to muffle the sounds. Therefore, even normal stomach movements can sometimes be felt or heard more loudly.
Gas can also be the reason.
Gas is also a reason for stomach rumbling. Swallowing air while eating or drinking or eating quickly causes gas to form in the stomach. Some food items also increase the amount of air in the stomach and intestines. When this gas moves in the intestines, a sound is heard.
