What ingredients are needed to make Gujarati Khatti Meethi Dal?
- Toor dal – one cup
- Tomato – one finely chopped
- Coriander – two tablespoons
- Turmeric – half a teaspoon
- Red chilli powder – half a teaspoon
- Coriander powder – half a teaspoon
- Curry leaves – 5 to 6
- Salt – as per taste
- Jaggery – half a cup
- Mustard seeds – half a teaspoon
- Cumin seeds – half a teaspoon
- Whole red chillies – 2 to 3
- Ginger – half an inch piece (grated)
- Cloves – 3 to 4
- Cinnamon – half an inch piece
- Asafoetida – a pinch
- Water – as per requirement
What is the recipe for making Gujarati sweet and sour dal?
- To make Gujarati sweet and sour dal, first wash one cup of toor dal thoroughly and soak it in water.
- Then, put the lentils in a pressure cooker, add twice as much water, and cook until they whistle 2 to 3 times. Be careful not to overcook the lentils, as this can ruin their taste.
- Once the lentils are cooked, open the lid of the pressure cooker, add chopped tomatoes, turmeric, red chili powder, salt, jaggery, and grated ginger, and simmer for 10 minutes. Also, add one cup of hot water and stir.
- Mix all the ingredients well in the lentils and let it cook on low flame.
- After this, heat oil in a tempering pan. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, and whole red chilies and let them cook.
- Now add the prepared tadka to the cooked lentils and then let it boil on medium flame for 5 to 6 minutes.
- Then garnish the prepared dal with fresh green coriander leaves.
- Now serve the delicious sweet and sour dal hot with roti and rice.
