The central government has approved more than 18.77 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0), giving a major boost to its “Housing for All” initiative.
At the latest Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting, more than 29,000 additional houses were approved across Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh.
Who Can Benefit From PMAY-U 2.0?
PMAY-U 2.0 is designed to provide housing assistance to eligible families living in urban areas, particularly those belonging to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Low Income Groups (LIG) and Middle Income Groups (MIG).
Depending on eligibility and financial circumstances, beneficiaries can receive support through different options under the scheme.
What Benefits Does the Scheme Provide?
The scheme offers several ways for eligible families to obtain or improve their housing. These include:
- Assistance to construct a pucca house
- Affordable homes through housing projects
- Affordable rental housing options
- Interest subsidy on eligible home loans
This means eligible families do not necessarily have to follow a single route to receive housing support. The assistance depends on the applicable component and the beneficiary's circumstances.
Income Limit Goes Up to ₹9 Lakh
PMAY-U 2.0 covers eligible urban households with annual household incomes of up to ₹9 lakh, subject to the specific conditions of the scheme.
The initiative is intended to help families move from inadequate, temporary or rented accommodation towards safer and more secure housing.
Women Getting Priority in House Ownership
One of the notable features of the scheme is its focus on women's ownership of houses.
According to the latest government figures, out of the 18.77 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, around 17.19 lakh houses—92%—have been allotted to women.
The houses are either registered in the name of the woman of the household or through joint ownership, strengthening women's position in household assets.
Special Focus on Vulnerable Groups
The scheme also includes beneficiaries from different socially and economically disadvantaged groups.
Among the houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 so far:
- 1.80 lakh have been allotted to senior citizens
- 3.25 lakh have been sanctioned for SC beneficiaries
- 1.02 lakh have been sanctioned for ST beneficiaries
- 8.22 lakh have been sanctioned for OBC beneficiaries
More Than 1 Crore Houses Already Completed
The latest approvals add to the broader progress under PMAY-Urban.
The government says that, combining PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, more than 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned, while over 1 crore houses have already been completed and delivered to beneficiaries.
What Should Eligible Families Do?
Families living in urban areas who believe they may qualify should check the applicable PMAY-U 2.0 eligibility conditions and the housing component relevant to their situation.
Applicants should also keep their identity, income, bank and property-related documents ready and ensure that information submitted during the application process is accurate.
With the latest approvals taking the total PMAY-U 2.0 sanctions close to the 20-lakh mark, the government is continuing its push to provide safe, affordable and permanent homes to eligible urban families.
