India is all set to bolster its aerial strike capabilities as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is fast-tracking the development of a new air-launched subsonic cruise missile. Designed to strike targets deep inside enemy territory with pinpoint accuracy and at lower cost, this missile is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Air Force’s offensive reach.
Key Highlights of the Missile:
-
Range: Up to 600 kilometers
-
Launch Platform: Fighter aircraft like Su-30MKI, Rafale, Mig-29, Tejas, and future AMCA
-
Target Capability: Command centers, airbases, and logistics hubs
-
Engine: Indigenous Manik turbofan engine (being upgraded for the missile)
-
Guidance: Combination of inertial navigation and satellite-based systems
-
Design Advantage: Low-level flight path to evade enemy radar and air defense systems
Air-Launched Advantage
Unlike ground-launched variants that require a booster to take off, this missile will rely on the altitude and speed of the aircraft it is launched from—making it lighter, more compact, and cost-efficient.
A Smarter Alternative to BrahMos-NG?
While the BrahMos-NG missile boasts speeds of Mach 3.5 and is ideal for high-speed strikes, this new subsonic missile is designed for:
-
Long-range attacks
-
Mass deployment
-
Lower production costs
It won’t replace BrahMos, but complement it, offering a balanced mix of speed, range, and affordability in aerial warfare.
When Will It Be Ready?
-
Testing is likely to begin by the end of 2025
-
If successful, induction could begin in limited numbers by 2027
Strategic Importance
With global security dynamics constantly shifting, India’s move to develop such missiles indigenously strengthens not just its defense preparedness but also reduces dependency on foreign weapon systems. DRDO’s progress signals India’s growing capability in building advanced, cost-effective weapon systems tailored to its strategic needs.
