The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday announced the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader and democracy activist Maria Corina Machado. The move is likely to cause a stir in the White House. President Donald Trump, who has claimed to have resolved at least seven international conflicts, has long coveted the prestigious award and has at times openly expressed his desire to receive it. His Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, won the Peace Prize in 2009.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, responding to a question on Trump's candidacy for the Peace Prize, said that the decision to award the prestigious award is based on the work and will of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize. Committee Chairman Jorgen Watne Fridnes said in a press conference that the committee sits in a room filled with portraits of all the laureates and that room is filled with both courage and integrity. Trump received several nominations for the award from around the world, including Russia, Rwanda, Gabon, Azerbaijan, and Cambodia. However, the prize committee stated that they had seen numerous instances of campaigning and media attention regarding the Peace Prize. "We receive thousands of letters every year from people wanting to explain what the path to peace is for them," said Jørgen Watne Friednes, adding that the committee values ​​courage and integrity when awarding the annual prize.
