In a major update for salaried employees, the government has approved an increase in the wage ceiling used for mandatory coverage under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The ceiling has been raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, marking the first revision in 12 years.
The change is expected to bring around 51 lakh additional workers under the EPFO social-security system, expanding access to benefits linked to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance coverage.
What Has Changed?
Until now, the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage was ₹15,000 per month. The government has now increased this limit to ₹25,000.
This means more employees earning wages within the revised ceiling can come under the EPFO framework.
The revision comes after a long gap, with the previous wage ceiling having remained unchanged for 12 years.
How Much Will Be Contributed to EPF?
The employee and employer contribution to EPF continues to be 12% under the existing contribution structure.
With the higher wage ceiling, the maximum amount considered for statutory contributions will increase. The pension contribution ceiling is also being raised from ₹1,250 to ₹2,080 per month.
According to reports, the change could increase the average monthly EPF contribution by around ₹600 for affected workers.
Will Your Salary in Hand Change?
For employees who become covered because of the revised ceiling, their own statutory EPF contribution may reduce the amount they receive as take-home salary each month.
However, the employer's EPF contribution is separate from the employee's contribution. Government officials have clarified that an employer cannot legally deduct its contribution from an employee's salary.
Who Could Benefit From the Change?
The revised ceiling is particularly relevant to workers who were previously outside mandatory EPFO coverage because their wages exceeded the old ₹15,000 limit but fall within the new ₹25,000 threshold.
The government expects approximately 51 lakh additional workers to be brought under the EPFO system as a result of the revision.
Why Is This Important?
EPFO coverage provides employees with access to retirement savings through EPF, pension benefits through EPS and insurance-related social-security benefits.
The government has said the higher ceiling is intended to expand social-security coverage and bring the statutory framework more in line with current wage levels and formal employment trends.
Employees affected by the change should check their salary structure and EPFO records once the detailed implementation guidelines are issued, particularly to understand how the revised ceiling affects their monthly PF deductions and employer contributions.
