The PM Vishwakarma scheme has reached an important milestone, with its registration target of 30 lakh beneficiaries achieved ahead of its third anniversary on September 17, 2026. The Central Government launched the scheme to provide end-to-end support to traditional artisans and craftspeople working in 18 recognised trades.
The scheme combines skill training, financial assistance, modern tool support and marketing opportunities under a single framework. For eligible artisans, it is designed to help improve both their skills and access to markets.
What Is PM Vishwakarma?
PM Vishwakarma was launched on September 17, 2023, with a total financial outlay of ₹13,000 crore for the period from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28.
The scheme focuses on traditional artisans whose livelihoods depend largely on manual skills and family-based knowledge. It covers 18 traditional trades and aims to help artisans improve the quality and reach of their products and services.
What Benefits Are Available?
The scheme provides several types of assistance to eligible beneficiaries.
1. PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card
After completing the registration and verification process, eligible beneficiaries receive a PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card. These provide formal recognition under the scheme.
2. Free Skill Training
Artisans can receive skill-upgradation training to learn modern tools, better practices and new designs.
Basic training is conducted for 5–7 days, while advanced training lasts for 15 days or more. Trainees are also provided a stipend of ₹500 per day during training.
3. Toolkit Support
The scheme also includes a toolkit incentive to help artisans access improved tools required for their respective trades.
This can be particularly useful for traditional workers looking to upgrade their equipment and improve productivity.
4. Credit Support
PM Vishwakarma also provides credit support as part of its financial assistance framework. The objective is to help eligible artisans expand their businesses and invest in tools, equipment and working capital.
5. Digital Transaction Incentive
The scheme encourages beneficiaries to adopt digital payments by providing incentives for eligible digital transactions. This is intended to help traditional businesses become more integrated with the formal digital economy.
Marketing Support Is Also Included
Apart from training and financial assistance, PM Vishwakarma also focuses on helping artisans find larger markets for their products.
Beneficiaries can be connected with platforms and opportunities such as the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), e-commerce platforms, trade fairs and exhibitions. The scheme also supports onboarding beneficiaries on the Udyam Assist Platform.
Which Artisans Are Covered?
PM Vishwakarma covers 18 traditional trades. These include occupations involving craftspeople and artisans who traditionally work with their hands and tools.
The scheme is designed around three broad objectives: recognising traditional artisans, improving their capabilities and creating opportunities for greater economic prosperity.
What Should Interested Artisans Do?
People working in an eligible traditional trade should check the official PM Vishwakarma registration and verification process before applying. Applicants should ensure that their personal and trade-related details are accurate during registration.
The government says the 30-lakh registration target has already been achieved, making the September 17 milestone significant for the scheme.
