The central government has made a big change in the fee for the renewal of registration of old vehicles. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a new notification in this regard. The government says that the purpose of this decision is to limit the use of vehicles older than 15 years and encourage people to get registration done on time.

Now registration can be done for 20 years

Under the earlier rules, only vehicles up to 15 years old could get their registration renewed. But now as per the new provision, vehicles up to 20 years old can also be re-registered. However, for this, vehicle owners will have to pay a higher fee.

How much will the new fees be?

In the new rules, renewal fees have been fixed for different vehicles. The rates are as follows (GST will have to be paid separately):

  • Invalid carriage – ₹100
  • Motorcycle – ₹2,000
  • Three-Wheeler/Quadricycle – ₹5,000
  • Light motor vehicle (like a car) – ₹10,000
  • Imported motor vehicle (2 or 3 wheeler) – ₹20,000
  • Imported motor vehicle (4 or more wheeler) – ₹80,000
  • Other vehicles – ₹12,000

How long will old vehicles last?

According to the new rules of the Central Government, registration of any vehicle can be done for a maximum of 20 years from the first time. That is, the vehicle owner will have to get the registration done again after the completion of 15 years, and for this, the heavy fee mentioned above will have to be paid.

Delhi-NCR got an exemption

These rules will be applicable across the country, but Delhi-NCR has been exempted from this. There is already a strict ban on old vehicles here. The government says that this step will gradually remove polluting and old vehicles from the roads. This is expected to improve environmental protection and road safety.
