Desi ghee has traditionally been a part of Indian diets and is commonly used in everything from rotis and dals to sweets. However, because ghee is rich in fat, many people wonder whether eating too much of it could increase the risk of gallstones.
Gallstones commonly contain cholesterol, which makes the connection seem obvious at first. But is desi ghee really responsible for gallstone formation? Gastroenterologists explain that the relationship is more complicated than simply blaming one food.
Does Desi Ghee Cause Gallstones?
Dr. Jatinder Singh Bhogal, Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kailash Deepak Hospital, explains that eating ghee does not necessarily cause gallstones.
Gallstones can develop when the normal balance of substances present in bile is disturbed. Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, where it plays an important role in digesting fats. Many gallstones are primarily made of cholesterol.
Therefore, eating desi ghee by itself should not automatically be considered a direct cause of gallstones.
