Are you also an Android user? Do you also use the messaging platform WhatsApp on your Android smartphone? Then there is important news for you. The company has decided to change the minimum system requirements for its platform. Due to this decision, the use of WhatsApp will be permanently discontinued on many Android smartphones. The company has said that from September 8, 2026, WhatsApp support will be completely discontinued on versions older than Android 6.0. In simple words, if you are using a smartphone running on Android 5.0 or 5.1, then WhatsApp support will be discontinued on your device as well.
Why did the company take this decision?
Messaging platform WhatsApp is constantly rolling out new features and updates. The company's aim is to improve the WhatsApp experience for users through these features and updates. But along with new features, it is equally important to keep the app updated for better performance. Because older versions of Android and weaker hardware can make it difficult to run these new features properly. For this reason, the company has now decided to stop WhatsApp support on older Android versions.
Reports suggest that a significant number of users in India, Brazil, Pakistan, and several Asian and African countries still use older Android smartphones. This decision could impact millions of users.
WhatsApp has issued an alert.
Messaging platform WhatsApp has already begun sending alerts to users. Users receive a notification as soon as they open WhatsApp. This service is said to be discontinued after September 8, 2026.
If your smartphone is running Android 6.0 or higher, there's no need to worry. This decision won't affect you, and WhatsApp will continue to function as usual. Furthermore, this decision will not affect iPhone and iPad users.
Do this now
If you're using a smartphone with Android 5.0 or 5.1, update it immediately. If the update isn't available on your phone, the only option is to buy a new smartphone. Also, back up all your chats now to ensure they're safe.
