7th Pay Commission: DA to increase from 63% to 67%? Find out when your salary will increase

7th Pay Commission: Before the 8th Pay Commission, the dearness allowance of central employees could reach 67%. Learn the full calculation and the new date.

7th Pay Commission: If you're a central government employee or pensioner, your pockets are about to get a little heavier. Effective July 1, 2026, your dearness allowance (DA) has increased from 60% to 63%. But the real surprise is expected on January 1, 2027. Looking at the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI-IW) trends, your DA could reach 67%.

This means a full 4% gain in one fell swoop. Interestingly, this increase could come into effect just four months before the 8th Pay Commission (8th CPC) report is released.

After all, how will your dearness allowance reach 67%?

The formula for calculating DA has been fixed since 2016. It uses AICPI-IW data for 12 months. The 63% DA, effective July 1, was based on data from July 2025 to June 2026.

The next installment (January 2027) requires data from January to December 2026. The figure for August 2026 is 154.4. If this figure remains stable at 154.4 from September to December, the math works out in your favor:

DA = [{(12-month average AICPI-IW x 2.88) − 261.41} / 261.41] × 100 − Current DA (%)

  • Projected average for January - December 2026: 152.0
  • Calculation using the formula: (152 × 2.88) = 437.76
  • Further calculation: (437.76 - 261.41) / 261.41 = 0.674607
  • Value in percentage: 0.674607 × 100 = 67.46%
  • After subtracting the existing DA (63%): 67.46% - 63% = 4.46%

The government usually gives the lower figure by omitting the decimal point, which means you will get a straight DA increase of 4%.

Why is this increase important just before the 8th Pay Commission?

The 8th Pay Commission, constituted in November 2025, is expected to complete its 18-month term in May 2027. The Commission is expected to submit its recommendations to the government around May-June 2027.

In such a scenario, this 4% increase in January 2027 could be the last DA revision under the 7th Pay Commission framework.

Note: When the new pay structure of 8th Pay Commission is implemented, DA may again be set to 'Zero' (0) and this 67% DA will be added to your Basic Pay.

What are the demands of employees and pensioners?

Employees' organizations are raising their voice before the Pay Commission:

  • FNPO (National Federation of Postal Employees): They demand that point-to-point DA be paid without rounding off. Furthermore, whenever DA crosses 25%, it should be merged into the basic pay.
  • Bharat Pensioners Samaj: They have demanded that quarterly DA revision should be implemented on the basis of average of every 3 months.

If the inflation index goes up further in the coming months, this increase could be more than 4%.
