50 Lakh Homes Now Have Rooftop Solar! Government Scheme Is Changing Electricity Bills

A major government rooftop-solar programme has reached an important milestone, with more than 50 lakh households now benefiting from installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
The scheme is aimed at helping households generate electricity from rooftop solar panels while reducing dependence on conventional power and lowering electricity bills. According to the government, more than 50.06 lakh households had received rooftop solar installations by July 2026.
Nearly 19 Lakh Homes Getting Zero Electricity Bills
The scheme is already making a noticeable difference for many participating households. Government data says nearly 19 lakh households are now receiving zero electricity bills after adopting rooftop solar under the programme.
The government has also reported that around 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been commissioned through the scheme so far.
July Saw Record Solar Installations
The pace of installations has accelerated considerably. July 2026 recorded the highest-ever monthly number of rooftop solar installations under PM Surya Ghar.
The government says the scheme is adding approximately one lakh beneficiary households every six days, highlighting the rapid expansion of rooftop solar adoption across the country.
What Is PM Surya Ghar?
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the government's flagship residential rooftop solar programme.
The initiative has an overall outlay of ₹75,021 crore and is designed to encourage households to install solar panels on their rooftops. By generating electricity at home, consumers can reduce the amount of power they need to purchase from the grid.
The scheme also supports India's broader effort to increase renewable-energy generation.
Government Buildings Are Also Going Solar
The programme is not limited to individual homes. More than 25,000 Central Government buildings have also been solarised under the initiative, according to government data.
