Elon Musk-owned social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has submitted its response to the Indian government regarding the spread of obscene and pornographic content on its platform. However, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has said it is not satisfied with the explanation provided and may seek further clarification or take additional action.
A senior government official stated, “We are not satisfied with X’s response. Further action is under consideration, and additional information may be sought from the company.”
Issue Linked to Grok AI
The response from X came after MeitY raised concerns over the alleged misuse of Grok, an AI tool integrated with the platform. The government had earlier directed X to remove pornographic and sexually explicit content reportedly being generated or circulated using Grok and to submit a detailed report on the steps taken.
Investigations into the matter are underway not only in India but also in the UK and parts of Europe, amid allegations that images of women and children were altered without consent using AI-generated tools.
MeitY’s January 2 Directive
On January 2, MeitY formally instructed X to:
-
Immediately remove all obscene, objectionable, and illegal content
-
Strictly monitor content generated through Grok AI
-
Submit an Action Taken Report within 72 hours
The ministry has also flagged alleged non-compliance with provisions of the IT Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021, stating that due diligence requirements are not being followed adequately.
X Warns of Account Suspensions
In its submission, X reiterated that it will take action against misuse of Grok. The company said:
-
Accounts posting illegal or obscene content will be suspended or permanently banned
-
Users generating such content through Grok will face strict action
-
X will cooperate with local governments and law enforcement agencies wherever required
Despite these assurances, the government believes the response lacks sufficient detail and clarity on enforcement mechanisms.
What Happens Next?
With MeitY indicating dissatisfaction, X may face:
-
Further queries from the government
-
Stricter compliance directives
-
Possible regulatory or legal action if violations persist
