Tensions between the United States and Venezuela have escalated sharply once again. Former US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Venezuela’s Vice President and interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, stating that she could face consequences even more severe than those faced by former President Nicolás Maduro if she fails to act in what he calls the “right direction” for the country.
Power Shift After Maduro’s Arrest
Following a US military operation, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was arrested and is currently being held in a New York prison. In the aftermath, Delcy Rodríguez assumed leadership responsibilities in Caracas. She openly condemned the US action and demanded Maduro’s immediate return to Venezuela.
Trump’s Message in Atlantic Interview
In a telephone interview with The Atlantic, Trump made it clear that he would not tolerate Rodríguez’s defiance of US actions.
He stated,
“If she doesn’t do the right thing for Venezuela, she may have to pay a very heavy price — possibly even greater than Maduro’s.”
Trump emphasized that Venezuela is not the only nation where the United States could intervene militarily if it deems necessary.
Shift in Trump’s Stance on Regime Change
Trump also hinted at a departure from his earlier opposition to regime change and nation-building. Addressing concerns among his MAGA supporters, he argued that any form of reconstruction or leadership change would be an improvement over Venezuela’s current situation.
“Call it rebuilding or regime change — whatever you want,” Trump said. “It cannot possibly be worse than what exists now.”
From Praise to Pressure on Rodríguez
Just days earlier, Trump had taken a very different tone. After the US operation in Caracas, he claimed Rodríguez had privately expressed willingness to cooperate with Washington. He even suggested that the US would temporarily “run” Venezuela to stabilize the country.
According to Trump, Rodríguez appeared ready to take whatever steps were necessary to “make Venezuela great again.”
Rodríguez Pushes Back Strongly
Rodríguez swiftly rejected those claims. She asserted that Venezuela is prepared to defend its natural resources and sovereignty. She also reaffirmed that the country’s defense council remains loyal to Maduro’s policies.
“We will never become anyone’s colony again,” she declared, demanding Maduro’s return.
Possibility of Further Military Action
Trump warned that continued resistance from pro-Maduro forces could lead to a prolonged and violent struggle. He suggested that if required, the US could launch another wave of military action or even take direct control.
“Venezuela is completely broken,” Trump said. “It is a failed state in every sense.”
Greenland Remarks Resurface
During the same conversation, Trump reiterated his long-standing interest in Greenland. He described the NATO ally as being surrounded by Russian and Chinese vessels and claimed the US needs Greenland for strategic defense purposes.
