e-Passport Seva: The Indian government has completely revamped passport services. On November 12, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs announced that obtaining a passport has become easier, faster, and more secure than ever before. The Indian government launched the Passport Seva Program V2.0 (PSP V2.0) and the Global Passport Seva Program V2.0 (GPSP V2.0). This made this possible. This will provide equal access to services for people living in India and abroad. From now on, passports issued to people will be e-passports, which will be chip-embedded.

The Government of India implemented this service effective May 26, 2025. The PSP V2.0 system has been activated at all 37 Passport Offices, 93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), and 450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) across India. Subsequently, the GPSP V2.0 system was launched at Indian embassies and missions abroad on October 28, 2025. With the launch of this service, passport applicants both domestically and abroad will now use a single digital system.

According to the information given by the Ministry of External Affairs, the Government of India has started e-Passport service from the month of May this year, which is more secure and better than the traditional passport.

  • The front cover of the passport is fitted with an RFID chip that stores the holder's biometric and personal information such as photograph, fingerprints and other details in encrypted form.
  • The chip itself sends data in a contactless manner, which will increase both speed and security at the immigration counter.
  • The e-Passport complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and significantly reduces fraud and forgery.
  • New passports are now being issued as e-passports, while old passports will remain valid until they expire. This means that people's old passports will not expire before their expiration date.

These hi-tech facilities will be available in e-Passport

According to reports, all e-passports issued by the Indian government will contain a radio frequency identification chip and antenna. They will store users' biometrics and personal data with encryption. Details such as a user's photo and fingerprint will be stored. Contactless data reading capabilities will speed up the verification process at immigration counters.

Preventing cyber fraud will be easier

A senior official with the Ministry of External Affairs stated that this new system will reduce fraud. We often see individuals holding multiple passports, so such cases will also decrease. This system will immediately detect if a person already has a passport.

80 lakh e-passports issued

According to information received, the Ministry of External Affairs has issued 8 million e-passports in India so far, while over 60,000 e-passports have been issued through Indian missions abroad.
