Food was often checked for its taste and safety before serving to ensure no adulteration. Mughal rulers were extremely particular about their diets. Court physicians determined what should be consumed, when, and in what quantities. Foods that could cause odors or digestive problems were considered unsuitable for the royal environment.
Was this applicable throughout the empire?
Historians believe that this restriction was not applied to the general public, but was primarily limited to the rules of the royal palace and court. Cucumbers, radishes, and other vegetables were commonly consumed in their daily diets by ordinary people. This practice was adopted to maintain royal discipline and court etiquette. This Mughal-era tradition demonstrates that not only taste, but also food etiquette, hygiene, and court discipline were highly valued during that era.
