Why AIMIM Councillor Sahar Shaikh’s Victory in Mumbra Is Drawing Widespread Attention

Young councillor Sahar Shaikh has emerged as one of the most talked-about faces in Mumbai’s political circles following her surprise victory in the recent Maharashtra municipal elections. Contesting on the ticket of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the 22-year-old won from the Mumbra constituency in Thane, a region traditionally dominated by rival political forces.

AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, delivered a strong performance in the civic polls, securing 125 seats across 13 of Maharashtra’s 29 municipal corporations. Among these victories, Sahar Shaikh’s win stood out due to both her age and the political significance of the constituency she represents.

Mumbra has long been considered a stronghold of Jitendra Awhad, a close associate of Sharad Pawar. Awhad, a former minister and three-time MLA from the Mumbra–Kalwa constituency, has held considerable influence in the area for years. Notably, Sahar Shaikh is the daughter of Yunus Shaikh, a longtime Awhad loyalist, making her victory politically symbolic.

Following her win, Sahar Shaikh made strong remarks targeting her opponents, stating that the next elections would further consolidate AIMIM’s presence in the region. She asserted that Mumbra would see a complete political shift in the coming years, claiming that AIMIM candidates would dominate future polls. Her comments, including references to the party’s growing strength and public support, quickly went viral on social media.

Sahar Shaikh is AIMIM’s youngest councillor and one of five party candidates who won from the Mumbra area. She defeated a candidate from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a result that is being viewed as a significant breakthrough for AIMIM in a region previously controlled by established political leadership.

Her victory has sparked celebrations among party supporters, who see it as evidence of AIMIM’s expanding influence, particularly among young voters. Political observers note that the result signals a changing dynamic in local politics in parts of Mumbai and Thane, with new leadership and narratives gaining ground.
