WhatsApp is preparing for one of its biggest privacy-focused updates yet—introducing usernames that may reduce the need to share your mobile number with strangers.
While the feature is still rolling out in phases, WhatsApp has already started allowing users to reserve usernames, hinting at a major shift in how people connect on the platform.
What’s Changing on WhatsApp?
Until now, WhatsApp has worked entirely on mobile numbers. To chat with someone, you first had to save their number.
With the upcoming update, users will be able to create a unique username, and others will be able to find and message them using it—without needing their phone number.
However, your mobile number will still exist in the background for account setup. It just won’t be as visible to others.
Username Reservation Has Started
Users with the latest version of WhatsApp can already try reserving a username.
To do this:
- Open WhatsApp
- Go to Settings
- Tap Account
- Select the new Username option
- Enter your preferred name and check availability
If it’s free, you can reserve it. But for now, this is only a pre-registration feature—actual chatting via usernames will roll out later.
Why Is WhatsApp Introducing Usernames?
The biggest reason is privacy.
Currently, sharing your number is unavoidable when:
- Talking to sellers or businesses
- Connecting with new people
- Using services like deliveries or bookings
This often leads to spam calls, unwanted messages, and privacy risks.
With usernames, you can simply share your handle instead of your phone number, keeping your personal contact more secure.
Who Will Benefit the Most?
This feature will be especially useful for:
- Online business owners
- Content creators and influencers
- Freelancers
- Journalists
- Students
- Women who prefer not to share their numbers
- Online communities and groups
Will Mobile Numbers Disappear?
No. Your phone number will still be required to create a WhatsApp account.
The difference is that it will no longer need to be shared publicly. Your username will become your visible identity, while your number stays private.
How Usernames Will Work
WhatsApp usernames will:
- Be completely unique (no duplicates allowed)
- Be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis
- Follow strict rules (no offensive or misleading names)
- Be changeable later (as per future policy updates)
A Big Shift in Privacy
This update could mark one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy changes so far.
It moves the app closer to platforms like Telegram, where usernames are already widely used. Given WhatsApp’s massive global user base, this change could reshape how over 2 billion people connect online.
In short, your phone number won’t disappear—but your username may soon become your new digital identity on WhatsApp.
