Every day, millions of passengers travel by train across India. To ensure smooth travel, Indian Railways appoints Ticket Checking Staff (TTEs) on trains to verify tickets and assist passengers. However, complaints of misbehavior by TTEs are sometimes reported. Many passengers are unaware of their rights or the correct way to complain during a journey.
Here’s what you should do if a TTE misbehaves with you on a running train.
What to Do First if a TTE Misbehaves
If a TTE uses abusive language, behaves rudely, threatens you, or tries to forcibly remove you from your seat:
-
Note the TTE’s name and badge number, which are displayed on the uniform
-
Remember the train number, coach number, seat number, date, and time of the incident
-
As per railway rules, a passenger with a valid reserved ticket (Sleeper or AC) cannot be forcibly evicted from their allotted seat
This information is crucial while filing a complaint.
Complain During the Journey Itself
Every train has a guard on duty. Passengers can:
-
Approach the train guard and submit a written complaint
-
Ask the guard to record the complaint in the complaint register
-
Contact GRP (Government Railway Police) or RPF (Railway Protection Force) personnel if available on the train
If officials are not available, a complaint can also be lodged at the next station after getting down.
Important Helpline Numbers to Note
Indian Railways provides dedicated helplines for passenger safety and grievances:
-
139 – For complaints related to TTE misbehavior, cleanliness, overcharging, or passenger nuisance
-
182 – For security-related emergencies
-
Rail Madad App / Website – Lodge complaints online and track action taken in real time
Complaints can also be filed if a co-passenger is drunk, using abusive language, or creating a disturbance during the journey.
Bottom Line
Passengers should not remain silent in case of TTE misconduct. Indian Railways has provided multiple complaint channels to ensure passenger safety and dignity. Keeping helpline numbers handy and knowing your rights can help you take immediate action during your journey.
