Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has firmly dismissed all speculation regarding a possible leadership change in the state. Addressing growing media chatter about a power-sharing deal or cabinet reshuffle, the veteran Congress leader said unequivocally, “There is no vacancy for the CM post. I am the Chief Minister of Karnataka and will remain in office for the full five-year term.”
‘No 50-50 Formula,’ Says Siddaramaiah
Siddaramaiah also rejected the much-discussed “50-50 formula” reportedly agreed upon after the Congress's victory in the 2023 state elections—an alleged arrangement under which he and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar would each serve as CM for 2.5 years. “There is no such formula,” he said. “DK Shivakumar himself has publicly stated that there is no vacancy for the CM post.”
DK Shivakumar Meets Priyanka Gandhi, Denies Leadership Talks
Amid rising political buzz, DK Shivakumar met senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi, further fueling rumors of a possible change in power dynamics. However, Shivakumar also categorically denied any leadership reshuffle, calling it “media speculation.”
“We are only in Delhi to discuss state issues with Union ministers,” Shivakumar said, adding that there is no proposal for any cabinet or leadership change.
Siddaramaiah Seeks Meeting With Rahul Gandhi
Siddaramaiah mentioned that he had requested a meeting with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, possibly to further clarify or consult on the internal chatter. However, he noted that no appointment had been confirmed yet.
Congress High Command Downplays Leadership Rumors
Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge has also denied any plans of reshuffling leadership in Karnataka. He said, “If any such decision is taken, the media will be informed officially.”
The Political Context
After the Congress won Karnataka in 2023, both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar were front-runners for the top job. The party ultimately chose Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister and Shivakumar as his deputy, reportedly under a compromise formula. However, periodic reports of rivalry and behind-the-scenes lobbying have kept the speculation alive.
