Strait of Hormuz: US President Donald Trump said that the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened under the agreement being prepared under the mediation of Pakistan.
US President Donald Trump on Sunday (May 24, 2026) made a major statement regarding the end of the ongoing conflict and tensions between Washington and Tehran in the Middle East. He said that negotiations on a peace agreement between Iran and the United States are largely complete. This has raised hopes of ending the three-month-old war and reaching a major agreement.
According to a Reuters report, Trump said the agreement, brokered by Pakistan, would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most vital maritime trade routes, whose closure has exacerbated the global energy crisis.
Trump spoke about the deal with Iran
US President Donald Trump wrote in a post shared on the social media platform Truth Social on Saturday (May 23, 2026), 'The final aspects and issues of the agreement are currently under negotiation and will be announced soon.'
According to the report, the agreement lays out a framework for ending months of fighting, lifting the US blockade on Iranian shipping, and reopening maritime routes. Furthermore, the issue of Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile, a long-standing US demand that Iran hand over to Washington, will be resolved through negotiations over the next 30 to 60 days.
Hopes for relief from the global energy crisis
According to Reuters, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is on a four-day visit to India, said that more significant news could emerge by Sunday (May 24, 2026). Meanwhile, a senior Iranian source told Reuters that if Iran's Supreme National Security Council approves the proposal, it will be sent to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei for final approval.
However, the Iranian news agency Tasnim said that differences remain on a few of the proposal's provisions. Therefore, if the US continues to create difficulties, a final agreement may not be reached. However, if the agreement is implemented, it could provide relief to global markets.
