Some childhood memories never fade — especially the sweet–tangy flavours we grew up loving. Those tiny 50-paise or 1-rupee tamarind candies that melted instantly in the mouth were more than just a treat; they were a part of our schooldays, our friendships, and our carefree moments.
Imli Dana Laddoo carries the same nostalgic taste. You can easily make them at home — not only to relive those memories but also to introduce your children to the flavours you once cherished.
What makes these laddoos special?
The perfect combination of tamarind’s tang, jaggery’s sweetness, and a hint of spice. Today’s kids may love chocolates and modern candies, but once they taste this traditional laddoo, they will forget store-bought sweets.
Ingredients needed
• Tamarind – 200 g (or 150 g tamarind pulp, seedless)
• Jaggery – 150 g
• Roasted cumin powder – 1 tsp
• Red chilli powder – 1 tsp (adjust to taste)
• Black salt – 1 tsp
• White salt – ¼ tsp
• Dry mango powder (amchur) – 1 tsp (optional)
• Powdered sugar (bura) – ½ cup
• A little oil for greasing hands
How to make Imli Dana Laddoo
-
If using ready-made pulp, remove the fibres. If using whole tamarind, remove seeds and fibres.
-
Soak the tamarind pulp in a little water. Mash well with your hands until it becomes smooth like a puree.
-
Grate the jaggery so it melts evenly and doesn’t form lumps.
-
Heat a pan on low flame. Add the jaggery and melt it while stirring continuously.
-
Add red chilli powder, black salt, roasted cumin powder, and optional amchur. Mix well.
-
Now add the tamarind pulp and cook the mixture until it thickens and starts leaving the sides of the pan.
-
Spread the mixture on a plate and let it cool completely.
-
Once cooled, grease your hands lightly with oil. Roll small portions into laddoos.
-
Roll each laddoo in powdered sugar for the final touch.
-
Store them in an airtight glass jar. They stay fresh for weeks.
These sweet–tangy tamarind laddoos will delight both children and adults — and with every bite, you’ll be reminded of your beautiful childhood memories.
