A major shake-up has occurred in the T20 World Cup 2026 points table after Scotland registered a commanding 73-run victory over Italy in the seventh match of the tournament, played in Kolkata. The emphatic win has pushed Scotland ahead of England in Group C, significantly altering the qualification equation.
Scotland Move to Second Place in Group C
Despite losing their opening match to the West Indies, Scotland have bounced back strongly. After defeating the West Indies in their second outing and now thrashing Italy, Scotland have climbed to second place in Group C with two points from two matches and a healthy net run rate of +0.950.
The West Indies currently sit at the top of the group with one win and a superior net run rate of +1.750. England, meanwhile, find themselves under pressure. Although they have one win from one match, their net run rate is lower than Scotland’s, placing them below the Scottish side on the points table.
Scotland are scheduled to face England next, a match that could prove decisive. With England having narrowly escaped defeat against Nepal earlier in the tournament, Scotland will be confident of pulling off another upset. A win over England would significantly strengthen Scotland’s chances of progressing to the next round. They are also set to face Nepal thereafter, giving them another opportunity to consolidate their position.
Scotland’s Dominant Performance Against Italy
Batting first, Scotland posted an imposing total of 207 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. George Munsey led the charge with a fluent 84 off 54 balls. He was well supported by Michael Jones, who scored 37, and Brendon McMullen, who remained unbeaten on 41 from just 18 deliveries. Michael Leask provided a late flourish, smashing 22 runs off only five balls to propel Scotland past the 200-run mark.
In response, Italy were bowled out for 134 runs in 16.4 overs. Ben Manenti top-scored with 52 off 31 balls, while Harry Manenti added 37. However, the Italian batting lineup failed to withstand Scotland’s disciplined bowling attack.
Michael Leask starred with the ball, claiming four wickets for just 17 runs. His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Qualification Race Intensifies
With Scotland overtaking England in the standings, Group C has become one of the most competitive groups in the tournament. The upcoming Scotland vs England clash is now set to be a crucial encounter, with major implications for qualification to the next stage of the T20 World Cup 2026.
