Suspected of Theft, Youth Tied and Brutally Assaulted in Bihar; Video Sparks Outrage

A disturbing case of mob violence has surfaced from Bihar’s East Champaran district, exposing a breakdown of law and order at the local level. The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of the Pipra police station, where a young man was allegedly tied with a rope and beaten mercilessly by a group of people on suspicion of theft. A video of the assault has since gone viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage.

The victim has been identified as Vikas Kumar, a resident of Maharani village. According to initial reports, Vikas was returning to his village after visiting a relative when he was stopped by a group of local youths in Chakwara village.

Assault over unproven theft allegations
As per the complaint, the accused — identified as Abhishek Kumar, Vivek Kumar and Nandkishore Paswan, along with several others — allegedly accused Vikas of theft without any evidence. Instead of informing the police or verifying the allegation, the group reportedly tied him to a pole using a rope and subjected him to physical assault.

The viral video shows the victim being kicked and punched repeatedly while some individuals allegedly encouraged others to join in the attack. Despite the victim pleading for mercy, the assault continued for several minutes.

Police action and family’s demand for justice
After the incident came to light, the victim’s family approached the police. Vikas’s father, Jagdish Mahato, submitted a written complaint at the Pipra police station, demanding strict action against those involved. Based on the complaint, the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and stated that further investigation is underway.

Authorities have also taken note of the viral video and are examining it as part of the evidence.

Rising concern over mob justice
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing instances of mob violence and vigilantism in parts of Bihar. Legal experts and local residents have stressed that punishing someone based on suspicion is a serious criminal offence and a grave violation of human rights.

Villagers in the area have demanded swift and exemplary punishment for those responsible, warning that unchecked mob behaviour encourages lawlessness and undermines public trust in the justice system.

Conclusion
The assault underscores the urgent need for stronger law enforcement and public awareness against taking the law into one’s own hands. Authorities have assured action, but the case has reignited debate over mob justice and citizen safety in rural areas of the state.
