Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has made it clear that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will never appoint him as head coach of the national team. Speaking on a Pakistani news channel, Akhtar explained that his commitment to doing what is right and working collaboratively is the reason for this.
Akhtar Criticizes Current Coaching and Selection
Shoaib Akhtar remarked, “First of all, the PCB will never appoint me as coach. The reason is that I will do the right thing. I’m not asking for all authority—I believe in teamwork. I want a 20-member selection committee and will work together with them, listening to their advice.” He also criticized Mike Hesson’s coaching and the current selection process as “absurd.”
A Vision for Reform
Akhtar further revealed that he would need three years to transform Pakistan cricket. “If I am given three years to reform the team, I will restore confidence in the players. I would assure players like Sam that they won’t be dropped, letting them play freely and regain trust in themselves,” he said.
Despite 15 years of experience in international cricket, Akhtar admitted he still feels like a rookie, emphasizing that his approach prioritizes fairness, collaboration, and long-term improvement over quick fixes.
