Bollywood’s ultimate icon, Sanjay Dutt, is on an absolute box-office roll. Currently ruling the screen as the industry’s most sought-after antagonist—fresh off massive appearances in The Raja Saab, Dhurandhar 2, and Raja Shivaji—the actor is now shifting his focus toward legacy building.
Hot on the heels of officially securing the rights to Subhash Ghai’s iconic Khalnayak for the highly anticipated Khalnayak Returns, industry insiders reveal that "Sanju Baba" has set his sights on another legendary milestone of his career.
Sanjay Dutt and his wife, Maanyata Dutt, are currently in final negotiations to acquire the complete rights to the 1999 cult crime-drama, Vaastav: The Reality. The move has sparked massive wave of speculation regarding a modern-day sequel or a complete cinematic universe centered around his most iconic anti-hero characters.
Shifting Focus to Three Dimension Motion Pictures
This aggressive acquisition strategy is part of a grand blueprint for Sanjay Dutt’s home production house, Three Dimension Motion Pictures.
-
The Vision: With a string of commercial successes post-COVID, Dutt is looking to build an independent content empire driven by nostalgic IP and high-octane action thrillers.
-
The Leadership: Maanyata Dutt is spearheading this production push, actively traveling between Dubai and Mumbai to oversee the business. The company has recently locked in a premium, state-of-the-art production headquarters located right next to Yash Raj Films (YRF) Studios in Andheri, Mumbai.
The Legacy of Vaastav (1999)
Released exactly 27 years ago, the Mahesh Manjrekar-directed Vaastav remains a gold standard in Indian gangster cinema.
-
The Box Office Power: Produced on a modest budget of just ₹7 crore, the film went on to become a runaway blockbuster, earning multiple times its investment at the box office.
-
The Character: The film featured Namrata Shirodkar as the female lead, but it was Sanjay Dutt's performance as Raghu—an innocent boy forced into the underworld who famously flaunted his "Pachis Tola" gold chain—that defined an era. The role won Dutt his first-ever Filmfare Award for Best Actor, cementing it as a core pillar of his cinematic legacy.
Current Status of Khalnayak Returns
While the paperwork for Vaastav is being processed behind closed doors, active pre-production has already begun for Khalnayak Returns.
Sanjay Dutt officially acquired the remake rights directly from veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts. During their initial meetings, Ghai agreed to step back from the director's chair, officially signing on to serve exclusively as a Creative Producer for the sequel. Three Dimension Motion Pictures is currently interviewing top-tier Bollywood action directors to finalize who will helm the ferocious next chapter of Ballu Balram.
The Ultimate Verdict: By systematically buying back the rights to Khalnayak and Vaastav, Sanjay Dutt is pulled off a genius producer move. Instead of waiting for external studios to offer him legacy roles, he is taking absolute control of his iconic characters. An official announcement regarding the Vaastav acquisition is expected to drop alongside the first teaser for his upcoming thriller, Aakhri Sawaal.
