PM Modi's Israel visit: 'Sudarshan Chakra' will be even more lethal than iron beam

With the arrival of "Iron Beam" laser technology from Israel, India's "Sudarshan Chakra" defense shield will become impenetrable. This will also provide new strength to the indigenous "Durga-2" project, which can destroy enemy drones and rockets at a low cost. If PM Modi's visit results in a defense deal (Iron Beam) between the two countries, it will also usher in a new era of diplomatic relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a historic two-day visit to Israel, starting Wednesday. This trip is being seen as an opportunity to elevate India-Israel's defense, trade, and technology ties to a new level. Israel's relations with many of its longtime allies have been strained since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, and India's support is being considered a major diplomatic victory for Israel.
The 'strategic partnership' between the two countries has become very strong.
PM Modi wrote on the social media platform X that the "strategic partnership" between the two countries has grown significantly stronger over the past few years. Meanwhile, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, calling Modi his friend, said that they are partners in innovation and security. Notably, during the dinner, Netanyahu surprised everyone by wearing a "Modi jacket," pictures of which are going viral on social media.

India's 'Sudarshan Chakra' plan
India is completely transforming its air defense system. In the past, we only protected specific areas, but now India is developing a protective shield called the "Sudarshan Chakra" that will cover the entire sky. It will have several layers:
- The outermost layer: This is where S-400 missiles from Russia are deployed. Three regiments have already arrived as part of a 2018 deal, and the remaining two will be deployed by 2026. India is also developing its own "Project Kusha."
- Medium Layer: It includes the Barak-8 (MR-SAM) system, jointly developed by India and Israel, which destroys enemy aircraft and missiles from a distance.
- Short Range Layer: Systems like Akash-NG and QRSAM are deployed for security near the border.
- Close protection: Shoulder-fired missiles are used to shoot down drones and helicopters.
What is 'Iron Beam' and why is it a game-changer?
Nowadays, enemies attack with cheap drones and rockets. Expending expensive Indian missiles to shoot them down is a losing proposition. That's why India is interested in Israel's "Iron Beam" technology.
- How it works: It's like a laser flashlight. Its intense light (fiber lasers) shines on an enemy drone or rocket for a few seconds, burning it to ashes.
- Cheaper Solution: While a missile costs millions, a laser attack costs only $3 to $5 (approximately Rs. 250 to 400). Even with maintenance, the cost still comes to around $2,000.
- Disadvantage: The laser's power is reduced in fog, rain or dust storms, so it will have to be operated in conjunction with a missile system.
India's 'DURGA-II' to get a boost
India is developing its own laser weapon, the DURGA-II. Collaborating with Israel will provide India with advanced laser precision and control technology. This will help India avoid relying on other countries for weapons in the future.
Not just weapons, business is also included.
India and Israel are no longer just buyers and shopkeepers, but are jointly manufacturing weapons.
- Adani-Elbit: Manufacturing drones in Hyderabad which will also be sold abroad.
- Kalyani Rafale: Parts of the missile system are being manufactured in India itself.
- Both the countries are also discussing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which will take trade to new heights.
First Indian PM to address the Israeli Parliament
PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset. He was also awarded the Knesset's highest honor, the Speaker of the Knesset Medal. Modi stated clearly that India has a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and that there can be no justification for the October 7th attack. He also appealed for peace.
