New Twist in Zubeen Garg’s Death: Singapore Media Says Singer Drowned While Swimming, Not Scuba Diving

Fresh revelations have emerged in the mysterious death of renowned Assamese singer and composer Zubeen Garg. Contrary to earlier reports that claimed he died during a scuba diving accident, Singaporean media now states that Garg drowned while swimming off St. John’s Island.

According to The Straits Times, the Singapore Police Force handed over the preliminary post-mortem report to the Indian High Commission at its request. The report cites drowning as the cause of death, and officials have ruled out foul play. Legal experts in Singapore noted that the inquiry is focused on tracing the sequence of events that led to the singer’s drowning.

Zubeen Garg, who was in Singapore for the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations and the Northeast India Festival under the India-ASEAN Tourism Year, tragically passed away on September 19. On that day, he joined a boat trip to St. John’s Island, where eyewitnesses said he was pulled unconscious from the sea after removing his life jacket during a swim. He was rushed to Singapore General Hospital but succumbed the same day.

Video footage that surfaced online showed him initially swimming with a life jacket before discarding it and re-entering the water. The Singapore Police have since urged people not to share any visuals related to the incident. A death certificate issued by the Singapore hospital also lists drowning as the official cause.

Meanwhile, the Assam government has intensified its probe into the case. Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta were arrested in Delhi this week and brought to Guwahati, where a court remanded them to 14 days of police custody. In addition, a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death in collaboration with Singaporean authorities.
