New Zealand Cricket has announced its central contracts for the 2025-26 season, marking a historic moment for young all-rounder Mohammad Abbas. At just 21 years old, Abbas has become the second Muslim cricketer in New Zealand’s history to receive a central contract, following Ajaz Patel.
Mohammad Abbas: A Rising Star of Pakistani Origin
Born on 29 November 2003 in Lahore, Pakistan, Mohammad Abbas moved to Auckland, New Zealand with his family at a young age. His father, Azhar Abbas, was a first-class cricketer in both Pakistan and New Zealand. Mohammad, a right-handed batsman and left-arm fast bowler, started playing cricket at the age of three.
Record-Breaking Debut Performance
On 29 March 2025, Abbas made his ODI debut against Pakistan at McLean Park, Napier, creating history by scoring the fastest half-century on ODI debut, reaching 52 runs off just 24 balls. This broke the previous record held by India’s Krunal Pandya, who took 26 balls. Abbas’s innings featured three fours and three sixes. He also made an impact with the ball by dismissing Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan.
Central Contract Milestone
New Zealand Cricket included Mohammad Abbas among 20 centrally contracted players for the upcoming season. Notably, some big names like Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson missed out this year, opening the door for fresh talents like Abbas.
This central contract is a significant step in Abbas’s promising international career and highlights New Zealand Cricket’s commitment to nurturing diverse talent.
