Therefore, this age is extremely critical for health. Doctors say that getting certain tests done every year after 40 can help prevent many future illnesses.
5 Yearly Tests for All Men After 40: While it's often said that real life begins after 40, this is actually the time when, if you don't pay proper attention to your body, the future can become difficult. Many chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, kidney disease, and obesity, begin as early as age 40. The problem is that most men only see a doctor when the problem becomes serious, leading to a life of illness. However, if you want quality of life, you should pay special attention to your health after 40. After this age, you should definitely get certain tests done every year to help detect future diseases. Dr. Vineet Malhotra, an andrologist and expert in male reproductive health at VNA Hospital, New Delhi, explains which tests men need to get done every year.
Make sure to get these 5 tests done.
- Blood Pressure - Dr. Vineet Malhotra says that if you're over 40, you should have your blood pressure checked every month. Regular blood pressure checks can help you prepare for the situation and help you avoid any future complications by maintaining a balanced blood pressure.
- Heart tests - Heart tests include several tests. Primarily, you should get an ECG and lipid profile every year. If these are positive, further testing is recommended. Cholesterol testing is crucial, as it can be undetected and is a major cause of heart attacks, heart failure, and cardiac arrest. If you are borderline, get a lipid profile test every six months and consult your doctor regularly. Additionally, maintain a healthy lifestyle.
- Blood Sugar Test - 100 million people in India have diabetes. The problem is that diabetes is now common among people as young as 30. Therefore, after 40, get a sugar profile test every year or every six months. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases at this age. Fasting blood sugar and HbA1c tests should be done at least once a year. If you are pre-diabetic, lifestyle modifications can help prevent this disease.
- Prostate Health Checkup - Prostate related problems can start in men after 40. It is important to get regular checkups done with PSA test and doctor's advice. Dr. Vineet Malhotra says that prostate is a pea-sized gland below the testicles. During reproductive years, the fluid secreted by this gland nourishes the sperm and performs various other functions, but when its requirement is less and due to many other reasons, there is a risk of prostate enlargement. This presses the urinary tract, due to which there is a lot of difficulty in urinating. It is completely treatable and if it is tested on time, it can be cured with medication also.
- Liver and kidney function tests - Nowadays, people are starting to develop fatty liver disease as early as the age of 30. Those who consume alcohol are at a higher risk of this liver and kidney disease. Additionally, poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle also increase the burden on the kidneys and liver. Therefore, every man after 40 should undergo a kidney function test and a liver function test once a year.
