Maharashtra Rains: Mumbai woke up with thunderstorms and strong winds; waterlogging due to continuous rain, suburban rail service affected..

After the arrival of southwest monsoon in Maharashtra, the state is receiving heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Rains have created havoc in different parts of the state. Heavy rains are lashing many parts of Mumbai city. Waterlogging has occurred in many parts after the rains. The situation is getting serious due to thunderstorms and strong winds since morning. Visibility has been poor due to dust storms, affecting rail and road traffic.

Officials said that due to continuous rain for a few hours, many low-lying areas and railway tracks in Mumbai were waterlogged. This affected traffic on roads and local train services on Monday morning. Many areas of Mumbai, especially the island city, received heavy rains for a few hours amid the warning of thunderstorms and strong winds issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Tracks were submerged due to heavy rains at Masjid, Byculla, Dadar, Matunga, and Badlapur railway stations on the Central Railway network. This slowed down the movement of trains during the morning peak hours. Waterlogging was observed in low-lying areas including King's Circle, Mantralaya, Dadar TT East, Parel TT, Kalachowki, Chinchpokli, and Dadar station, affecting vehicular movement.

A thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and strong winds lashed Mumbai on Monday morning, officials said. This affected suburban rail services and traffic slowed down due to poor visibility in many parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a thunderstorm warning. Given this, heavy rains and strong winds lashed Dadar, Mahim, Parel, Bandra, Kalachowki, and many other parts of the city.

According to the IMD's 'nowcast' warning, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds with speeds of up to 50-60 kmph were expected at isolated places in Mumbai in the next three to four hours.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, no major waterlogging was reported anywhere in the city and suburbs. However, some low-lying areas of the city were flooded. Suburban services of Central and Western Railways were running late and road traffic slowed down due to poor visibility.

Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Neela said, "Suburban local trains are running but at some places the speed is low. Passengers complained that trains headed towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus were running late. Western Railway claimed there was no waterlogging on its tracks and trains on its corridors were running normally. However, passengers complained of some delays.

Mumbai IMD has forecast light to moderate rain in parts of Mumbai in the next 24 hours. "Generally cloudy sky. Strong winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph and light to moderate rain at isolated places in the city and suburbs are likely," the forecast said.

The city has been receiving continuous rain since last night and the island city received more rain than suburban areas. The island city recorded an average rainfall of 58 mm in the 24 hours till 8 am, 19 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 15 mm in the western suburbs. The BMC said that waves may rise to 4.75 meters at 11.24 am. Then waves are expected to rise to 4.17 meters at 11.09 pm. Similarly, waves are expected to rise to 1.63 meters at 5.18 pm and 0.04 meters at 5.21 am on Tuesday.
