Kharmas, also known as Malmas, occurs twice a year in the Hindu calendar. This period begins when the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Sagittarius. Scriptures consider Kharmas an inauspicious month for auspicious activities, though it is highly favorable for religious practices, charity, and spiritual work.
According to the Dikri calendar, Kharmas in 2025 will begin on Tuesday, December 16. It will conclude on January 15, 2026, when the Sun moves into Capricorn. Astrologers advise avoiding certain important tasks during this period, as they are believed to bring unfavorable results. Here are four activities that should not be performed during Kharmas.
-
Housewarming ceremonies
Griha Pravesh, or home entrance rituals, should not be carried out during Kharmas. This period is considered inauspicious for moving into a new home. According to Hindu beliefs, doing so may affect the household’s prosperity, peace, and well-being. -
Starting a new business
Beginning a new business venture during Kharmas is not recommended. Astrologers believe that initiating financial activities during this period can lead to losses, instability, and financial challenges. -
Marriage, Mundan, and Namkaran
Ceremonies such as naming rituals (Namkaran), Mundan (tonsure), and other auspicious sanskars are avoided during Kharmas. It is believed that performing these rites in this period does not yield positive or blessed outcomes. -
Marriages
Weddings are strictly prohibited during Kharmas. Astrological belief suggests that marriages performed in this month may bring marital stress, misunderstandings, or long-term difficulties in the relationship.
Kharmas is therefore a time for spirituality rather than worldly beginnings. Devotees are encouraged to focus on religious worship, charity, meditation, and self-reflection during this one-month period.
