Jairam Ramesh Appears Before Rajya Sabha Privileges Committee; Matter Treated as Serious

A significant meeting was held today by the Privileges Committee of the Rajya Sabha regarding the breach of privilege case against Congress MP Jairam Ramesh. The committee reportedly considers the matter serious and may summon Ramesh again for further questioning. Ramesh appeared in person and offered his explanation, stating: “It was not my intention to disrespect the Chair. I fully respect the House and the Chair.”

Background of the case
The controversy dates back to April 2023, when BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi filed a privilege complaint against Ramesh. The allegation centres on a remark made by Ramesh during the last Budget Session, in which he said: “The Speaker should not be a cheerleader for the ruling party; the opposition should also be heard.” At the time, the remark was directed at then-Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar and was referred to the Privileges Committee.

When did the statement occur?
Ramesh’s statement came during the Budget Session amid sustained opposition disruptions demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Adani issue. House proceedings were repeatedly interrupted, raising questions about decorum and parliamentary conduct. The Privileges Committee will now deliberate further considering Ramesh’s explanation, the facts of the case, and implications for parliamentary decorum. Present at the meeting were Deputy Chairman Harivansh, and members Sudhanshu Trivedi, Deepak Prakash, Kartikeya Sharma, GK Vasan, and Surendra Nagar.

Parliament’s winter session looms
The committee’s action comes ahead of the winter session of Parliament, scheduled from December 1 to December 19. With the opposition expected to raise significant uproar and the Congress planning a major rally in Delhi, the session is anticipated to be closely watched.
