Hardik Pandya's future ahead of IPL 2027 is becoming a major talking point. After Mumbai Indians finished ninth in IPL 2026, questions have emerged over the all-rounder's future with the franchise, including speculation about a possible trade. The Indian Express had earlier reported that Hardik could lose the Mumbai captaincy after the team's disappointing season.
Amid the trade rumours, a surprising development has now emerged: Hardik was reportedly interested in returning to Gujarat Titans, the franchise he led to the IPL title in 2022.
Hardik reportedly wanted a GT comeback
According to a report cited by the Indian Express, Gujarat Titans were open to the possibility of bringing their former captain back.
The report also claims that the franchise discussed the possibility with current captain Shubman Gill, who reportedly had no objection to Hardik returning to the squad.
However, negotiations reportedly broke down over one important issue — the captaincy.
Captaincy became the deal-breaker
Hardik reportedly wanted to return to Gujarat Titans as captain.
That condition was not accepted by the franchise, which has backed Shubman Gill as its current leader. As a result, the proposed return did not progress.
There is an important caveat, though: Hardik's spokesperson has denied that the cricketer has directly discussed a trade with any franchise. The spokesperson reportedly said that if another team is interested, it should first approach Mumbai Indians.
So, the reported GT negotiations should be treated as a claim from sources rather than a confirmed trade discussion.
Hardik's successful Gujarat chapter
Hardik's connection with Gujarat Titans goes back to the franchise's first IPL season in 2022.
He was appointed captain and immediately produced a remarkable campaign. Gujarat won the IPL title in its debut season under his leadership and reached the final again in 2023.
Hardik had therefore established himself as the face and leader of the new franchise before making a surprise move back to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season.
His return to Mumbai didn't go as planned
Hardik returned to Mumbai Indians as captain in 2024, replacing Rohit Sharma.
The move generated considerable controversy among Mumbai fans, and the team's results did not immediately improve. Mumbai finished last in 2024, although the team bounced back to reach the playoffs in 2025.
IPL 2026 was another difficult campaign. Mumbai lost 10 of their 14 league matches and finished ninth, prompting renewed questions about Hardik's future as captain.
What happens to Hardik now?
For now, there is no confirmed trade involving Hardik Pandya.
Gujarat Titans appear committed to Shubman Gill as their captain, while Hardik's representative has denied direct discussions with other franchises. Meanwhile, reports have linked the all-rounder with several teams ahead of IPL 2027.
Hardik's next move will therefore depend on what Mumbai Indians decide and what happens during the IPL trade window.
A return to Gujarat would certainly be one of the most fascinating IPL comebacks, but if the captaincy remains non-negotiable, that door currently appears to be closed.
