Three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders are once again considered strong contenders for the Indian Premier League 2026 title. However, even before the tournament begins, the franchise is facing serious challenges due to injuries in its pace attack.
While the team built a formidable squad during the mega auction and retention phase, concerns over the fitness of key fast bowlers could disrupt the balance of the side.
Strong squad built around experienced core
KKR retained a strong core ahead of the new season. Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane continues to lead the side after finishing as the team’s highest run-scorer in IPL 2025. His experience and stability at the top of the order remain crucial for the franchise.
Other key retained players include Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora.
At the auction, KKR made headlines by signing Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for ₹25.20 crore, making him one of the most expensive overseas purchases in IPL history. Another major signing was Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, acquired for ₹18 crore, known for his slingy action and deadly yorkers in the death overs.
Pace attack faces injury crisis
Despite assembling a strong pace unit on paper, injuries have created uncertainty for the team ahead of the tournament.
The fast-bowling department includes Pathirana, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, Akash Deep and Kartik Tyagi. However, injuries to key bowlers have complicated matters.
Harshit Rana is expected to miss most or all of the IPL 2026 season after suffering a knee injury before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The pacer recently underwent surgery and was seen walking with crutches during the BCCI Naman Awards ceremony.
Meanwhile, uncertainty also surrounds Matheesha Pathirana, who suffered a calf strain during a match against Australia national cricket team during the T20 World Cup. If he fails to recover in time, KKR’s bowling attack could be severely weakened at the start of the tournament.
In the absence of these two bowlers, the responsibility may fall on Vaibhav Arora along with Akash Deep, Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi. The franchise has also added Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani as a backup option.
Batting depth and spin remain key strengths
Despite the concerns over pace bowling, KKR still possess significant strength in batting and spin.
The top order could feature Finn Allen alongside Ajinkya Rahane, while Cameron Green and Rinku Singh are expected to take charge in the middle and finishing overs. Additional batting depth comes from players such as Rovman Powell, Ramandeep Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.
However, KKR’s biggest weapon remains spin. The experienced duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy can dominate the middle overs, especially on the spin-friendly surface at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, KKR’s campaign may largely depend on how effectively they manage their injury setbacks and whether their remaining bowlers can step up in the absence of key pacers.
