Selling or giving away an old smartphone may seem as simple as removing the SIM card and performing a factory reset. But if you don't prepare the device correctly, personal information can sometimes remain accessible through accounts, backups or connected services.

Before handing your old phone to someone else, take a few important precautions.

1. Back Up Everything You Need

Before deleting anything, make sure your important photos, contacts, documents and other files have been backed up.

Check that the backup has actually completed and that you can access the important data from another device or through your cloud account.

Once the phone is reset, recovering locally stored information may be difficult or impossible.

2. Remove Your Accounts

Don't simply reset the phone while leaving your main accounts connected.

Sign out of major accounts and remove the device from services where necessary. This can also prevent problems for the next owner, particularly with security systems that associate the device with your account.

3. Disable Device-Tracking Features

Features designed to help you find a lost phone are extremely useful when you own the device. But before transferring ownership, make sure the phone is no longer linked to your account's device-tracking system.

This helps ensure the new owner can properly activate and use the device.

4. Remove Your SIM and Check the eSIM

A physical SIM card should be removed before the phone changes hands.

If you've used an eSIM, check your phone's cellular settings and carrier instructions to ensure your mobile plan is removed or transferred correctly.

5. Don't Forget Your Memory Card

If the phone contains a microSD card, decide whether you're keeping it.

If you are giving the card away with the phone, back up anything important and securely erase its contents. Otherwise, simply remove it and keep it.

6. Disconnect Smartwatches and Other Accessories

Your old phone may still be paired with a smartwatch, wireless accessories or other devices.

Unpairing them before the reset prevents unnecessary connection issues and removes the old phone from the accessory's trusted-device list.

7. Perform the Factory Reset Last

Only after backing up your information and removing your accounts should you perform a factory reset.

The reset removes your personal data and returns the device to its initial setup state.

Afterward, don't sign back into the phone just to check it. Instead, stop at the initial setup screen and let the new owner complete the process.

8. Check the Phone One More Time

Before handing it over, inspect the device carefully.

Make sure there are no SIM cards, memory cards, handwritten passwords, documents or other personal items left behind. Also check that important data has been successfully transferred to your new device.

A Few Minutes Can Protect Years of Personal Data

An old smartphone can contain far more personal information than you realize—from photographs and conversations to saved accounts and access to other services.

Taking a few extra minutes to back up your data, remove your accounts and reset the device properly can make the transfer much safer.

The golden rule is simple: don't hand over an old phone until you're certain it no longer gives access to your digital life.
