The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, with several notable inclusions and omissions. The selection meeting was held in Mumbai, where key decisions were finalized.
The biggest development is the appointment of Shubman Gill as vice-captain of the squad. Gill, who also served as deputy during the Sri Lanka T20 series, retains his leadership role. In another boost, Jasprit Bumrah returns after recovering from an injury he sustained during the England Test series.
However, the selectors have left out Yashasvi Jaiswal, despite his promising run in recent months. Instead, Gill has been backed at the top and entrusted with leadership responsibility.
Five Key Takeaways from Team Selection
-
Gill as Vice-Captain – Shubman Gill replaces Axar Patel as vice-captain and will partner Suryakumar Yadav in leadership duties.
-
Bumrah’s Return – Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been cleared fit and adds strength to India’s bowling attack.
-
Jitesh Sharma Back – The explosive wicketkeeper-batter, who impressed with RCB in IPL, returns as a designated finisher.
-
Rinku Singh Rewarded – Consistent domestic and T20I performances earn him a spot as a middle-order power-hitter.
-
Spin Combination – Kuldeep Yadav is included as the specialist spinner, while Ravi Bishnoi misses out.
Standby players include Dhruv Jurel, Prasidh Krishna, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and Riyan Parag.
