Team India's international schedule for September has taken an unexpected turn. Afghanistan have confirmed a three-match T20I series against India in Delhi, and the dates now clash with the window that had been earmarked for India's proposed tour of Bangladesh.

The development has put the Bangladesh tour in serious doubt and could mean that India's visit to Bangladesh is postponed yet again.

India-Afghanistan T20 series confirmed

The Afghanistan Cricket Board and BCCI have confirmed a three-match T20I series in Delhi. The matches will be played on September 13, 15 and 17, with Afghanistan designated as the host despite all three games being held in India.

The series is part of Afghanistan's Future Tours Programme and has now been officially scheduled.

Why is Bangladesh's tour in trouble?

India's proposed white-ball tour of Bangladesh was originally scheduled for September 1 to 13.

The tour was supposed to include three ODIs and three T20Is. However, the newly confirmed Afghanistan series begins on September 13 and continues until September 17, leaving little or no room for the Bangladesh fixtures in the previously planned window.

Reports now suggest that the Bangladesh tour is facing near-certain cancellation or another postponement.

Bangladesh had been waiting for India's tour

The Bangladesh Cricket Board had been trying to make the India tour happen after it was previously postponed.

The proposed series had already been moved from an earlier schedule, and the latest September window was intended to accommodate the bilateral white-ball fixtures.

With the Afghanistan series now officially confirmed, however, India's international calendar has become even more difficult to accommodate.

Could the Bangladesh tour be postponed again?

At this stage, it would be more accurate to say that the Bangladesh tour is in serious doubt rather than officially cancelled.

The Afghanistan series has been formally announced, while there has been no comparable new confirmation cancelling the Bangladesh fixtures. The final outcome will depend on discussions between the relevant boards and the scheduling decisions made by the BCCI.

Afghanistan series will be played in Delhi

The unusual aspect of the upcoming series is that Afghanistan will technically host India, but all three matches will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

The three matches are scheduled for:

• September 17

This will be an unusual international arrangement, with Afghanistan serving as the designated host while the matches take place in India.

India's packed schedule continues

The Afghanistan series comes after India's Test tour of Sri Lanka, which runs through late August. India also have a busy home season ahead, including series against several international opponents later in the year.

For Bangladesh, however, the immediate concern is the September window.

If the proposed tour cannot be accommodated around the Afghanistan T20Is, Bangladesh may have to wait even longer to host India in a bilateral series.
