The Indian women’s cricket team is set to receive a major boost ahead of a big international tournament. Three additional T20 matches have been added to Team India’s upcoming South Africa tour, giving Harmanpreet Kaur’s side valuable preparation time before the next major challenge.

The Indian women’s team had a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026, where the defending ODI champions failed to qualify for the semifinals. After a break from international cricket, the team will return to action in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026.

However, Team India’s main focus is already on the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027, scheduled to be held in February 2027. Keeping this tournament in mind, the extra T20 games against South Africa have been added.

Historic South Africa Tour Gets New Schedule

Team India will travel to South Africa in December 2026 for a historic tour. This series will be special as it will mark the first time the Indian women’s team plays a Test match on South African soil.

Earlier, the tour included only a Test match and an ODI series. But Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have now modified the schedule by adding a three-match T20I series.

According to the revised schedule:

• The tour will begin with a Test match in Port Elizabeth.

• The three-match ODI series will be played from December 16 to December 22.

• The T20I series will take place from December 26 to December 30.

Why Were T20 Matches Added?

The newly added T20I series will help both teams prepare for the upcoming Women’s Champions Trophy 2027.

The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy is being introduced for the first time and will be played in Sri Lanka. Unlike the men’s edition, which is traditionally played in the ODI format, the women’s tournament will follow the T20 format.

Therefore, these matches will provide players with an important opportunity to adapt to the format, test combinations, and strengthen their strategies before the major event.
