India has taken a 1–0 lead in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand after a hard-fought four-wicket win in the opening match. However, the joy of victory has been overshadowed by worrying injury news from the Indian camp. After wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Washington Sundar is now almost certain to be ruled out of the remainder of the series.
Washington Sundar’s injury adds to Team India’s worries
Washington Sundar suffered a side strain while bowling in the first ODI. He was able to bowl only five overs, conceding 27 runs, before experiencing sharp pain and leaving the field. Despite the discomfort, Sundar returned later to bat, showing grit and commitment, but his condition raised serious concerns after the match.
Fast bowler Harshit Rana confirmed that Sundar had suffered a side strain, an injury that usually requires rest and recovery, making his availability for the remaining matches doubtful.
Second major setback after Rishabh Pant
Team India had already been dealt a blow before the series began, with Rishabh Pant ruled out due to injury. If Washington Sundar is also sidelined, it could affect the team’s balance. Sundar’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball—especially his economical bowling and useful lower-order runs—makes him a key asset in ODIs.
How the first ODI unfolded
The opening ODI was played in Vadodara, where India chased down a challenging target in a thrilling finish. After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first. New Zealand posted a strong total of 300 runs, powered by solid knocks from Conway (56), Nicholls (62), and Mitchell (84).
India’s chase began on a shaky note, but Virat Kohli anchored the innings with a brilliant 93. Shreyas Iyer, making his return after injury, added a valuable 49. In the final stages, KL Rahul and Harshit Rana chipped in with 29 runs each to seal the win.
What lies ahead
While India currently holds the advantage in the series, Washington Sundar’s injury is a growing concern for the team management. The medical update on his condition will be closely monitored, as his absence in the remaining two matches could pose a significant challenge for Team India moving forward.
