IMD Weather Alert 2026: Rain with thunder and lightning warning in many parts of the country, be cautious

Many parts of the country are currently experiencing a different kind of weather. While some areas continue to experience intense heat and heatwaves, the weather has suddenly changed in many states of North and Northeast India.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert regarding heavy rain, storm and lightning in more than 10 states of the country.
According to the Meteorological Department, this situation may persist for the next few days. Therefore, it is important to know what the weather will be like in your state and what precautions you should take.
Know which states will be affected by the weather
According to the latest report of the Meteorological Department, a new Western Disturbance and Cyclonic Circulation have become active.Due to this, the following weather activities can be seen in different regions of the country:
- North and Central India: Light to moderate rain and strong winds are expected in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi-NCR, and surrounding areas. Hailstorms are also possible at isolated places in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
- Northeast India: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till May 5.The residents here have been asked to be cautious of problems like waterlogging and landslides.
- Hill States: Light snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and rain in the lower areas.
- South India: Rain and thundershowers are likely over coastal and interior parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka.
Temperature fluctuations and relief
While on one hand people in the plains are troubled by the scorching sun and hot winds, on the other hand, due to rain and cold winds, the maximum temperature has dropped by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
However, this drop in temperature is only temporary, as humidity may increase after the rain.
Pay special attention to these things
The Meteorological Department has issued some important advisories for citizens in view of the changing weather:
- Don't go under trees: Avoid taking shelter under any tree during thunderstorms and lightning.
- Stay away from open spaces: If you are outside, try to go to a permanent house or a safe place.
- Travel Caution: While travelling in hilly areas, follow the guidelines issued by the local administration regarding landslides.
- Agriculture and Power: Strong winds may damage crops and power supply, so farmers have been advised to keep their ready crops safe.
