The ongoing war in the Middle East has affected the entire world. Disruptions in shipping traffic have led to a shortage of LPG cylinders across the country. People are facing difficulties in obtaining gas cylinders. Some are trying to store cylinders at home. However, this decision by such people is not only dangerous but also illegal. The government and oil companies have established strict rules regarding LPG connections and cylinders. Breaking these rules could result in imprisonment. Let's learn more about this.
One House, One Connection Rule
One house, one connection rule is applicable for LPG connections in India. Only one LPG connection is considered valid in a house. Indane Gas of Indian Oil Corporation, HP Gas of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Gas of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited provide connections to the customers. If a customer already has a connection from one company, then taking a connection from another company at the same address is considered against the rules. However, customers can take a double cylinder connection from the same company. In this, two cylinders are available on one connection.
How many cylinders is legal to store in a household?
According to regulations, it's common for domestic consumers to have two cylinders per connection. One can be used for use, while the other can be kept as a reserve. Furthermore, a consumer can purchase a maximum of 15 domestic cylinders per year. Authorities can take action if someone accumulates more than the required number of cylinders or more than 40 kg of LPG without a valid permit.
Strict action can be taken against hoarders.
Anyone found storing more gas cylinders than the permissible limit at home can face strict action. Anyone found illegally storing cylinders or engaging in black marketing can have their gas connection cancelled and be fined. In serious cases, this offense is considered an offense under the Essential Commodities Act. Those found guilty under this Act can face imprisonment ranging from 3 months to 7 years. Therefore, hoarding cylinders at home should be avoided.
