India’s popular singers Honey Singh and Karan Aujla are facing growing trouble after the Punjab State Women’s Commission took strict action over alleged objectionable lyrics about women in their recent songs. The controversy centers around Karan Aujla’s new song “MF Gabru,” which has sparked widespread uproar for using words deemed demeaning towards women. Acting on the backlash, the Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognizance and directed the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) to initiate an investigation conducted by a senior officer.
Karan Aujla has been formally summoned to appear before the Commission on August 11, 2025, to explain the objectionable content in his song. Simultaneously, similar action has also been taken against another high-profile Punjabi singer, Honey Singh, for his song “Millennium.” The Commission has ordered both artists to appear at 11:30 AM, and has sent a letter to the Punjab DGP requesting official inquiry and appropriate legal or regulatory action if violations are established.
The songs in question are not only embroiled in controversy for their content but have also become viral hits online. Karan Aujla’s “MF Gabru” attracted 34 million views on YouTube in just six days. Honey Singh’s “Millennium,” released 11 months prior, has amassed an impressive 396 million views to date. Despite their popularity, both artists have faced criticism before for lyrics regarded as offensive, suggesting a recurring issue with provocative content in Indian pop music.
Public protests and calls for accountability have mounted, with critics arguing that such lyrics are disrespectful and harmful to women and Indian cultural values. The Women’s Commission’s actions reflect an increasing intolerance of sexist language in popular music, signaling that singers and content creators may now face tougher scrutiny and possible penalties for similar offenses in the future.
