Jaipur: The monsoon has once again unleashed its fury in Rajasthan. Torrential rain has lashed many parts of the state for the past 24 hours, disrupting normal life. Heavy to extremely heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, has affected everything from roads to schools.
Districts in southern and western Rajasthan, such as Jalore, Sirohi, Barmer, Balotra, Udaipur, and Dungarpur, have been the hardest hit. Flood-like conditions have developed in some areas, and water levels in rivers and dams are rising rapidly.
IMD issues double alert: Heavy rain warning in 13 districts
The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for 13 districts of Rajasthan for Monday. Red and orange alerts have been declared in some of these districts, while a yellow alert has been implemented in others. This clearly indicates that the next 24 hours could prove challenging for many parts of the state.
Districts under Red/Orange alert:
- Sirohi
- Balotra
- Barmer
- Jaisalmer
- Jalore
Districts under Yellow Alert:
- Pali
- Phalodi
- Jodhpur
- Udaipur
- Salumber
- Dungarpur
- Banswara
- Rajsamand
Thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain are expected in these areas, while the rest of Rajasthan is expected to see a decrease in rainfall intensity over the next week.
Schools are on holiday, but staff must remain present.
In view of the heavy rains, the administration has decided to close schools and Anganwadi centers in nine districts. These districts are:
- Sirohi
- Jalore
- Jaisalmer
- Barmer
- Dungarpur
- Balotra
- Banswara
- Salumber
- Udaipur (Holiday in all parts except urban areas)
However, this holiday is only for students. School staff must remain present at the institution.
How much rain fell where?
The rainfall figures over the past 24 hours are astonishing. Some major areas recorded the following rainfall:
- Sanchore – about 8 inches
- Mount Abu – 6 inches
- Ajmer – 61 mm
- Pilani – 38 mm
- Dabok – 52 mm
- Sangaria – 57 mm
- Jalore – 66 mm
Apart from this, light to moderate rain continued in many areas including Kota, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Bikaner.
Cause of weather change: Effect of depression
According to the Meteorological Department, the well-marked low pressure system over southern Rajasthan has now become more active and transformed into a depression. This system is now located in the border areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan and is expected to cause heavy rainfall in the coming days.
